Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Physical Therapy

Patients often have questions before starting physical therapy, whether they’re recovering from an injury, preparing for surgery or looking for relief from ongoing pain. At Physical Therapy Associates, we believe informed patients make more confident decisions about their care. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear about physical therapy, treatment options and what to expect during recovery.

Do I Need A Referral To Start Physical Therapy?

Direct Access allows many patients in Texas to begin physical therapy without first obtaining a physician referral. A licensed physical therapist can evaluate your condition and determine whether physical therapy is right for your needs. However, some insurance plans may still require a referral for coverage.

What Should I Expect During My First Physical Therapy Appointment?

Your first visit typically includes a discussion about your symptoms, medical history, goals and daily activities. Your therapist will also evaluate movement, strength, flexibility and function. From there, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan designed for your needs.

How Long Does Physical Therapy Take To Work?

Recovery timelines vary depending on the condition being treated, its severity and your consistency with treatment. Some patients notice improvements within a few visits, while others may require several weeks of care. Your therapist will help establish realistic expectations based on your situation.

Will Physical Therapy Hurt?

Physical therapy should feel challenging at times, but treatment should not feel overwhelming or unsafe. Some exercises or techniques may cause temporary soreness, especially when recovering from an injury or surgery. Your therapist will adjust treatment as needed to keep you progressing safely.

What Should I Wear To Physical Therapy?

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is usually best. Depending on the area being treated, your therapist may recommend clothing that provides easy access to a shoulder, knee, hip or other body part during evaluation and treatment.

Can Physical Therapy Help Me Avoid Surgery?

In some cases, yes. Physical therapy can help improve strength, mobility and function, which may reduce symptoms enough to delay or avoid surgery. However, every condition is different. Your therapist can help determine whether conservative treatment is appropriate or if additional medical evaluation is needed.

What Conditions Can Physical Therapy Treat?

Physical therapy can help address a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, balance issues, post-surgical recovery and movement limitations. Treatment is designed to improve function and help patients return to daily activities.

Why Might I Need A Functional Capacity Evaluation?

An FCE may be recommended after a workplace injury, surgery or extended medical leave when there are questions about returning to work safely. The evaluation can help determine physical capabilities, identify limitations and provide guidance for return-to-work decisions. Physicians, case managers, employers and insurance providers may use FCE results as part of the recovery and return-to-work process.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment technique that uses thin needles to target trigger points within muscles. It is commonly used to address muscle tension, improve mobility and support overall movement. Dry needling is often combined with exercise and other physical therapy treatments.

What Is Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy takes place in a pool environment and uses the natural properties of water to support movement and exercise. The buoyancy of water reduces stress on joints while allowing patients to improve strength, mobility and endurance.

At Physical Therapy Associates, aquatic therapy is available at our Conroe clinic and our Huntsville Main location at 127 Medical Park Lane. If you’re interested in aquatic therapy, our team can help determine whether it’s an appropriate part of your treatment plan.

Can Physical Therapy Help Improve Balance?

Yes. Balance therapy focuses on improving stability, coordination and confidence with movement. It can be beneficial for older adults, individuals recovering from injury and anyone experiencing dizziness, instability or an increased risk of falls.

What Is A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation, or FCE, is a comprehensive assessment used to measure an individual’s physical abilities and limitations. During the evaluation, a therapist assesses activities such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, walking and other job-related tasks. The goal is to provide objective information about a person’s ability to safely perform work duties or other physical activities.

What Is Pre- And Post-Operative Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy can play an important role both before and after surgery. Pre-operative care helps prepare the body for a procedure, while post-operative care focuses on restoring mobility, strength and function during recovery. These programs are tailored to the individual and their surgical goals.

How Long Does A Functional Capacity Evaluation Take?

Most Functional Capacity Evaluations take several hours to complete, though the exact length depends on the purpose of the evaluation and the activities being assessed. Your therapist will explain what to expect beforehand and guide you through each portion of the process to ensure the results accurately reflect your current abilities.

Is Physical Therapy Only For Injuries?

No. While physical therapy is commonly associated with injury recovery, it can also help improve mobility, manage chronic conditions, enhance athletic performance, prevent injuries and support long-term wellness.
