Understanding And Resolving Hip Pain

Hip pain can affect every step you take — literally. Whether you’re experiencing hip flexor pain, hip joint pain or discomfort that radiates into the lower back, Physical Therapy Associates provides evidence-based treatment to help you move freely again. We work with patients in Conroe and Huntsville to identify the root cause of pain and design an individualized plan for lasting relief.

How The Hip Works — And Why It Hurts

The hip is one of the body’s largest and most important joints. It’s a ball-and-socket joint, where the rounded head of your thigh bone (femur) fits into a cup-shaped socket in your pelvis (acetabulum). This design allows for a wide range of motion — walking, running, bending and twisting — while supporting much of your body’s weight.

The hip is surrounded by muscles, tendons and ligaments that provide stability and power. Key muscle groups include the hip flexors (lifting your leg), glutes (extending and rotating your hip) and adductors (bringing your legs together). When any of these muscles or the joint itself becomes irritated or injured, pain can occur.

Hip pain causes range from overuse injuries and muscle strains to arthritis, bursitis and labral tears. Sometimes discomfort develops suddenly, such as sudden hip pain without injury, which may result from inflammation, nerve irritation or an underlying medical condition. In women, hormonal changes during perimenopause can lead to perimenopause hip pain due to changes in bone density, muscle elasticity and joint lubrication.

A person lies on a couch while another person, possibly a physical therapist, lifts and bends their leg at the knee, providing assistance or therapy in a clinical setting.

Physical Therapy Treatments For Hip Pain

No matter your diagnosis, our goal remains the same — to restore your mobility and quality of life.

Your hip pain physical therapy plan may include:

  • Manual therapy — Hands-on mobilization to improve joint movement and reduce stiffness
  • Strengthening exercises — Targeting glutes, core and hip flexors for better support
  • Stretching routines — Relieving tension and restoring flexibility in the hip muscles
  • Dry needling — Addressing deep muscle trigger points for pain relief
  • Posture and gait training — Improving movement patterns to prevent reinjury

We also provide hip flexor pain treatment and perimenopause hip pain treatment tailored to each patient’s needs.
